Dear Second Grade Families,
I was out of the classroom for two days this week. Mrs. Gedde did a great job keeping us on schedule and moving forward. Here is what we did this week in our classroom…
Language Arts – - This was our fifth and final week of our theme, America’s People. Vocabulary terms for the week were treated, crops, union, strike, crops, boycott, border, awarded, and weakened. Our anthology for the week was a biography of Cesar Chavez. With the help of the anthology we learned about drawing conclusions. In grammar, we are continuing to review some of the concepts from earlier in the year. This week we focused on homophones, homographs, verbs, and adverbs.
Math – - We started our look at graphs and tables this week. We worked on reading the key for the graph and using a graph to fill out a table or vise versa. Next week we are all about the NWEA and our final interim for math. We have come a LONG way in math this year!
Science – We continued learning about our last 3 simple machines: the inclined plane, the wedge, and the screw. The students made their own model of an inclined plane, worked with screws, and used a wedge to separate play dough. They will have a test on this next Thursday, May 24th. They should study their simple machines journal that they made in school, their study guide, and their vocabulary cards.
History – - We started the week learning about 5 more Greek gods and goddesses. We then started learning about the Trojan War and Trojan Horse. I am guessing some second graders have been sharing the story at home.
Writing – - This week we had a Crown College clinical student in to teach our writing lessons. We compared different versions of classic fairy tales. The second graders then wrote and illustrated a new version of Snow White. We have some very creative kids!
Extras – - Our Mystery Reader this week was Mrs. Oman. Half our class will be in her third class next year and very much looking forward to it!
Looking Ahead – Monday we will be taking the math NWEA. Tuesday and Wednesday we will be taking the final math interim. Friday I will be in the building, but not teaching.
Looking Farther Ahead – - May 19th – Spring Fling – There are still may spots available to volunteer. Thanks!
