Amanda Bakken, 1st Grade

Bakken’s Weekly Buzz:  May 14-18th

We have had another great week in first grade!  The days are just flying by!  I cannot believe we are so close to the end of the school year!

Math: This week we finished our entire 1st grade Singapore Math. I asked my class how they felt about finishing their math and I received a mix of responses.  Some were happy to finally be finished with all of that hard work they have to do in math, some were kind of happy and kind of sad about it, and most were sad about finishing their 1st grade math books because they knew what was coming next… 2nd grade math books AND homework!  Next week we will take our final math interim test.  For the remainder of the school year we will brush up on our skills in addition, subtraction, and telling time.

Language Arts: This week in Language Arts we wrapped up our “Home Sweet Home” unit.  We read a story about the white house and we read a poem about a snail’s house.  We also practiced story sequencing, future tense verbs, and conventions while writing.  Next week we will have some fun with different reading and writing projects outside of our SRA curriculum.  There will not be any spelling words next week!

Workshop:  This week in workshop we played different vowel blend games, we wrote about our favorite summer activities, we stamped our spelling words, we listened to “Mother You’re the Best, But Sister You’re a Pest!”, and we read books at our level.

Notes, News, and Reminders:
*Tomorrow is PJ Day!  Our school exceeded our Book Fair goal and received a special non-uniform day!       Please make sure your student’s PJ’s are school appropriate.  Socks and shoes are still required.
*Field Trip Permission slips for Highland Park are due tomorrow!  We are wearing our college t-shirts for the field trip!  It will be easy to spot the first graders in their construction cone orange t-shirts!
*Saturday is the SPRING FLING!  I hope to see you and your family there!
*Since we had some troubles with the sound during our NWEA tests, our class will be retaking them next week Tuesday and Wednesday.  Please make sure your child is getting a good night’s sleep and eating a good breakfast so our minds and bodies are ready for the test!
* Friday, May 25th is a College t-shirt day and it is the last FISH awards ceremony for the year!
*There is no school on Monday, May 28th
*Please let me know if you would like to celebrate your child’s summer birthday within the next 3 weeks!
*The last week of school is SPIRIT WEEK at CA!
            – Monday: Character Day
            – Tuesday: Professional/Career Day
            – Wednesday: Twin/Triplet Day
